What to rent for a wedding, and what it costs
A restroom trailer is a towable unit with flushing toilets, running water, lighting, mirrors and climate control, and it is what people picture when they ask about a nice wedding restroom. A deluxe flushable porta potty is the step below: a standard-size unit with a foot flush and an interior hand sink. A standard unit at a wedding is a mistake unless it is for the crew.

How many restrooms does a wedding actually need?
Work from one stall per 50 guests for a four hour reception, then add 15 to 20 percent because alcohol raises both frequency and dwell time. A 130 guest Brooklyn wedding running six hours wants four stalls, which is a four-stall trailer, or a two-stall trailer plus two deluxe units if the loading dock will only take the smaller trailer.
Where units are clustered at a single location, the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 exception 4 sets the accessible share at 5 percent of the cluster, with a minimum of one, so every wedding needs at least one accessible option. Trailers with an ADA stall exist, and where the trailer has steps you add a ground-level ADA unit beside it. What a trailer needs before it can be delivered in this city
This is where New York weddings differ from every other market, and it is the conversation we would rather have eight weeks out than eight hours out.
- Power. A 110-volt 20-amp circuit per manufacturer spec, or a generator. Rooftops rarely have a spare circuit anywhere near where the trailer has to sit.
- Water. A garden hose connection, or the on-board fresh water tank, typically 100 to 300 gallons per manufacturer spec, which limits how long the trailer runs unassisted.
- A tow route. A two-stall trailer is roughly 14 to 16 feet long before the tow vehicle, and it cannot be walked in through a garden gate.
- A level pad. Trailers level on jacks, but they need something solid under them, not soft lawn after three days of rain.
- Written building approval. Lofts, rooftops and dock access all need someone in the building to confirm in writing that the load and the route are fine.
Where a trailer genuinely will not fit, the answer is a bank of deluxe units screened with fabric, not a trailer parked somewhere that blocks the fire route.
Do you need a permit for a wedding porta potty in NYC?
Only if it goes on public right of way. On a private rooftop, in a courtyard, on a Staten Island lawn or inside a rented loft building, no permit applies. Put the same unit at the curb and it needs a permit from the New York City Department of Transportation, filed through borough offices, with turnaround running from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. The NYC DOT Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street handles it, and 311 will confirm what your block needs.
City parkland is a separate track again. A ceremony in Prospect Park or Flushing Meadows Corona Park runs through the NYC Parks special events permit process, and the park sets where a service vehicle may drive long before we do. Where the trailer goes so nobody looks at it
Guests should find the restrooms without being shown, and photographers should never have to work around them. On a rooftop, that usually means the far side of the bulkhead. In a courtyard, behind the catering tent with a lit path. On a Staten Island or Queens lawn, at the edge of the hardstand where the truck can reach it.
Two things people forget. First, the walk matters more than the fixture: an unlit 200 foot path across grass in heels is what generates complaints, not the unit itself. Second, the New York City Noise Code treats 10pm to 7am as the night period, so a generator running late needs to sit well away from the guests and further still from the neighbours. Servicing, timing and the day itself
ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly servicing as the floor for a unit in normal use, and a wedding compresses a week of use into six hours. For a single-day event the trailer arrives serviced, stocked and tested, and it is collected after the event rather than mid-party. Multi-day weekends get a service visit between days, usually early morning.
Delivery is normally the day before, which in Manhattan and Brooklyn is often the only slot the building will allow. An attendant is worth it above roughly 200 guests, mostly for restocking and keeping the space presentable rather than anything dramatic. How far ahead should I book a wedding trailer? Two to three months for a Saturday between May and October. That season is also street fair and event season across the five boroughs, and trailers are the first thing to go.
Can a trailer go on a rooftop? Sometimes, with a crane or a freight elevator and written sign-off from the building. Often the honest answer is a bank of deluxe units instead.
