Why is Hoboken harder than the mileage suggests?
Because it is roughly one square mile of four and five storey row houses with almost no off-street space. That is the whole problem. The Mile Square City nickname is not marketing, and a renovation on Garden Street has nowhere to put a unit except the street or a rear yard reached through the building.
So the drive is thirty minutes and the placement conversation is the long part. We ask for a photo of the frontage before we quote, because the 2010 ADA Standards require a 36 inch minimum clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1 and a standard unit is about 44 inches wide per manufacturer spec. Hoboken's permit is not New York's permit
This trips up contractors who work both sides of the Hudson. A unit on a New York City sidewalk needs a Department of Transportation permit through a borough office. Cross the river and none of that applies. Hoboken runs its own street obstruction and reserved-parking approvals through City Hall on its own timeline, and the reserved-parking piece matters more here than in almost any town we serve, because a unit in a parking lane occupies a space the city meters.

What delivery actually costs out here
Delivery to Hoboken runs $75 to $150 on a normal booking, and the number is driven by access rather than by the 9.9 miles. A drop into a fenced site off Willow Avenue is at the bottom of that band. A unit carried down a stoop and around to a rear yard on a Sunday is at the top, because one takes ten minutes and the other takes an hour.
Weekly service is included either way. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly servicing as the minimum for a unit in normal use, and our driver needs a clear approach plus about 30 feet of hose reach. What goes to Hoboken most
- Home renovation units. Brownstone gut jobs are the steady work here, usually one standard unit on a monthly rental.
- Deluxe flushable units. Waterfront events along Sinatra Drive and Pier A Park, where the unit sits in front of a view and a standard unit looks wrong.
- Event restrooms. Street closures on Washington Street and the arts and music events that fill the waterfront parks through the summer.
- Roll-off dumpsters. Almost always paired with the renovation work, and almost always needing the same parking-lane conversation.
Do the crews here need more than a toilet?
Usually yes. OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) requires one toilet per 20 workers on a site running a 40-hour week, and OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) separately requires washing facilities where workers handle harmful substances. On a Hoboken row-house job that means a handwashing station alongside the unit, because a standard unit has no sink built in.
Space is the constraint, not budget. If the ratio says two units and the frontage takes one, the honest answer is one unit plus tighter servicing and a second placement somewhere workable. How many porta potties you need runs the arithmetic for both crews and crowds.
Flooding, and why it changes placement
The low-lying western half of Hoboken has a long documented flooding problem, and it is the reason we will not set a unit in a spot that ponds. A tipped unit is a hazard and a mess, and the fix is usually as simple as moving it four feet onto higher ground or strapping it to a fixed point. Say so when you book if the block is one of the ones that takes water.
