What we rent, and what the words mean
A portable toilet is a self-contained unit with a holding tank underneath, 60 to 70 gallons on most manufacturer spec sheets, pumped and washed on a schedule rather than plumbed into anything. That is the whole product. Everything else is a variation on it.
The fleet splits four ways. Standard units go to crews. Deluxe flushable units go anywhere a client, a guest or an actor will open the door. ADA accessible units are built around the 60 inch diameter turning space the 2010 ADA Standards specify in section 304.3.1. Restroom trailers are priced by stall count, not by the day.
Around that sit the rest of the temporary site kit, on the same trucks and the same routes: roll-off dumpsters, storage containers, chain link fence, handwashing stations and septic pumping for the parts of Staten Island and eastern Queens still running on tanks.
Why does New York change how this job works?
Because here, placement is a legal question before it is a logistics one. A unit going on a city street or sidewalk needs a permit from the Department of Transportation, approvals run through the borough offices, and turnaround stretches from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. The NYC DOT Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street administers it. 311 is the fastest way to get a straight answer about one specific block.
Then there is width, which is the part people miss. The 2010 ADA Standards require a 36 inch minimum clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1, and a standard unit is about 44 inches wide. On plenty of narrow side streets that arithmetic simply does not close, and the unit has to go somewhere else. We would rather say that on the phone than after the truck is double-parked. What we will not tell you
We do not have a fixed price list, and any company in this market that hands you one has not asked where the job is. A walked-in placement four blocks off Broadway and a driveway drop in Levittown,
27.7 miles east, are different jobs with different costs. What we publish instead is the honest market range and the things that move it, on the porta potty rental cost page, with the daily and monthly numbers split out on per day and monthly rental.
We also will not quote a sidewalk placement before we know whether that block can legally take one. That answer takes a phone call and sometimes a site photo. It saves a wasted delivery fee often enough that we treat it as part of the booking rather than an extra step.
How servicing actually works
ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly service as the minimum for a unit in normal use, and that is the floor on every rental we run, never an upsell. A visit means the tank gets pumped, the interior gets washed down, the deodoriser is recharged and the paper is restocked. Busy placements, mainly film sets and street events, move to two or three visits a week.
Our driver needs a clear approach for the vehicle and about 30 feet of hose reach. That single requirement decides more delivery outcomes in Manhattan than anything on the order form. How often units are cleaned has the detail, and do porta potties smell answers the question nobody wants to ask out loud.
Who calls us
Four kinds of work fill the schedule here. Dense construction, where OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) requires one toilet per 20 workers on a site running a 40-hour week. Film and television production, which books late and wants film set restrooms that do not look like a jobsite. Street fairs and block parties across all five boroughs. And race season, which is why marathon and race restrooms sit on their own page.
Venue work is its own thing. Citi Field, Yankee Stadium, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Prospect Park and Randalls Island each run their own service vehicle access rules and their own lead times. Ask the venue before you ask us, because their rules outrank our schedule. For crowd counts, start with how many porta potties you need, and for crews start with construction site services.
