Why one day costs the most per day
Delivery and collection are two truck movements, and in New York those movements are the expensive part of the whole operation. Spread across one day they carry the entire cost. Spread across a month they nearly disappear.

What a one day rental in New York usually includes
- Delivery inside an agreed window, which on many blocks is narrower than you expect
- The unit stocked with paper, hand sanitiser and deodoriser
- Collection the same evening or the following morning
- No service visit, since a 60 to 70 gallon tank per manufacturer spec will not fill in one day at normal use
ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly servicing as the minimum for a unit in normal use, which means a genuine one day rental sits entirely inside that interval and needs nothing beyond a clean, stocked unit on arrival. A unit that turns up short of paper on a one day job is a supply failure, not a service schedule question.
What it does not include is a permit. If the unit touches a New York City street or sidewalk it needs one from the Department of Transportation, filed through borough offices, with turnaround from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. What drives the daily price up
Six things move a one day number in this market, and only one of them is the unit.

- Delivery window. A drop that has to happen between 6am and 8am costs more than one that can
happen any time Tuesday.
- Same day booking. Squeezing a stop into a routed truck costs more than a scheduled one.
- Weekend collection. Sunday pickup is overtime for someone.
- Unit type. Deluxe and accessible units are bulkier to haul and fewer fit on a truck.
- Walked-in placement. If the truck cannot get within about 30 feet, someone walks it in. A

What kind of jobs actually need a single day?
Three, mostly. Film and television shoots that occupy a location for one day and move on, which New York produces more of than any other US market and which normally book deluxe flushable units rather than standard ones. Street fairs and block parties, which run through the city's Street Activity Permit Office and land heavily on weekends between May and October. And race events, where the whole restroom plan exists for about four hours.
Everything else that thinks it needs one day usually needs a weekend. How many units does a one day event need?
Plan one unit per 50 guests for a four hour event, and add 15 to 20 percent where alcohol is served. For an eight hour day, step the count up rather than relying on a mid-day service visit. Where units are clustered, the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 exception 4 sets the accessible share at 5 percent of the cluster, and never fewer than one.

Do you need a permit for a one day rental?
Only if the unit goes on public right of way, and that answer does not soften because the rental is short. A single day on a Manhattan sidewalk needs the same DOT permit as a six month placement, filed through the same borough office, and the NYC DOT Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street runs the process. 311 will tell you what applies to your block.
Placement is decided by pedestrian clearance first. Nothing blocks a curb ramp, a building entrance, an emergency path or a work-zone route, and the 2010 ADA Standards require a 36 inch minimum clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1. Is a one day rental cheaper than a weekend?
Usually not by much, and sometimes not at all. The gap between a $150 single day and a $200 weekend is one Saturday of not worrying. Where the unit is already going out on a Friday and coming back Monday, the weekend rate is often the same number written differently.
