What is a porta john?
A porta john is a portable toilet: a single-occupant plastic cabin with a sealed holding tank, a urinal, a vent stack and a lockable door, delivered by truck and pumped on a schedule. It is the same product sold elsewhere as a portable toilet rental, a standard porta potty or a portable restroom rental.
The word is regional and it is a jobsite word. Contractors here say john, event planners say restroom, and both are ordering the same 44 inch wide unit with a 60 to 70 gallon tank per manufacturer spec. If two quotes use different words and the prices are far apart, the difference is almost never the unit.

How contractors here actually order them
The order that goes wrong is the one placed by unit count alone. What a dispatcher needs is the cross streets, the gate or lot the truck uses, the hours the block accepts deliveries, who signs, and whether the unit sits on private property or public right of way. How many porta johns does OSHA require?
OSHA 1926.51(c)(1) requires one toilet per 20 workers on a construction site running a 40-hour week. Above 20 workers, OSHA 1926.51(c)(2) calls for one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers. The count is heads on site, so a job with four trades rotating hits the second unit faster than the GC usually expects.
OSHA 1926.51(f)(1) separately requires washing facilities where workers handle harmful substances, which is why a portable sink or a handwashing station belongs on the same order rather than in a later argument. Where the unit goes when the site has no room
This is the New York version of the problem and it has nothing to do with money. If the ratio says three units and the footprint holds one, the workable answer is one unit on site, a higher service frequency, and a second placement somewhere legal within a short walk. We will say that out loud before you book rather than after.

- On a rooftop by crane or lift, with the building's written sign-off

Do porta johns on a NYC sidewalk need a permit?
Yes. A unit on a New York City street or sidewalk needs a permit from the Department of Transportation, filed through borough offices, with turnaround from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. NYC DOT's Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street runs it and 311 answers block-specific questions.
Pedestrian clearance decides everything before the permit does. Nothing blocks a curb ramp, a building entrance, an emergency path or a work-zone route, and the 2010 ADA Standards require a 36 inch minimum clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1. Service, and what a real visit covers
ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly servicing as the minimum for a unit in normal use. On a jobsite that means the tank is pumped, the interior is washed down, the deodoriser is recharged and paper is restocked. New York State permits the haulers who move that waste under 6 NYCRR Part 364.
Two-shift sites and demolition work usually need twice weekly. Is there a luxury porta john?
Sort of, and it is worth being precise because the phrase covers two very different products. A deluxe flushable unit is a standard-footprint cabin with a foot flush, an interior sink and its own fresh water, at $250 to $400 a weekend. A luxury restroom trailer is a towable unit with porcelain fixtures, climate control and running water, starting near $1,000 and rising with stall count.
