How big is a 20 yard dumpster?
A 20 yard roll-off dumpster is an open-top steel container of about 20 cubic yards, delivered on a hooklift truck and hauled away loaded. The footprint is the part people underestimate. At 22 feet it eats close to two full parking spaces, and the truck needs roughly 55 to 60 feet of straight, clear approach to set it down and pick it up again.
Here's the detail that decides a lot of New York jobs: the 20, 30 and 40 yard containers all share that same 22 by 8 foot footprint. Only wall height changes, from 4.5 feet up to 8. So if a 20 fits your curb, a 30 fits too, and the extra volume is usually cheaper than a second haul. What kills the upgrade is overhead: a sidewalk shed, a mature London plane on a Queens side street, or a fire escape. The sizes and dimensions page has every measurement side by side, and the 10 yard is the fallback where the block is too tight.
What fits in a 20 yard dumpster?
Six to eight pickup loads, which in this market usually means:
- A kitchen and bathroom renovation in the same apartment
- A full roof tear-off on a Queens or Staten Island two-family
- 300 to 400 square feet of hardwood, subfloor and underlayment
- A commercial office fit-out strip in Long Island City or Downtown Brooklyn
- Garage, basement and yard cleanout on one job
- Fencing, decking and light landscaping debris, often alongside a temporary fence around the work zone
Roofing is where the tonnage sneaks up. Asphalt shingles weigh roughly 230 to 400 pounds per square, a square being 100 square feet of roof, so a 20 square tear-off is 2.3 to 4 tons before anyone counts the plywood. That's the whole allowance. Tear-offs get quoted as their own category for exactly this reason. Dumpster weight limits shows the maths for every size.
How much does a 20 yard dumpster rental cost in New York City?
Typical weekly market ranges are $475 to $700, with extra days around $50 to $115 and 2 to 3 tons included. Prices reviewed July 2026. These are market ranges rather than a quote, and Manhattan placements needing a permitted lane sit at the top while an off-street placement in eastern Queens sits near the bottom.
Two lines to get named before you compare quotes: the per-ton overage rate, and whether delivery and haul are separate charges or bundled. The dumpster rental cost page breaks all of it out. Also worth checking that whoever you hire holds a license from the NYC Business Integrity Commission, which regulates private trade waste hauling under Title 16-A of the Administrative Code. Unlicensed carting is common enough here that the price gap is a signal.
Does a 20 yard dumpster need a permit in NYC?
On a New York City street or sidewalk, yes. The Department of Transportation issues the permit through its Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street, borough offices handle approvals, and turnaround ranges from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. 311 is the quickest route to an answer for a specific block.
A 22 foot container is a harder permit than a 12 foot one, simply because it occupies more curb. It also has to clear the pedestrian route completely: the 2010 ADA Standards set a 36 inch minimum clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1, and a curb ramp or building entrance can never be blocked. Private property placements skip all of it. Read dumpster permit requirements before you set a start date, and porta potty permits if the crew needs a restroom on the sidewalk too.
What can't go into it
The load gets rejected at the transfer station if the wrong thing is in it, and the return trip is billed to you. Asbestos is the big one in older New York building stock, and the NYC DEP Asbestos Control Program requires an ACP-5 filing before many Department of Buildings approvals. New York State's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act has kept televisions and monitors out of landfill disposal since January 2015. Leftover paint goes through New York's postconsumer paint collection program, not into the can. Full list on what cannot go in a dumpster.
Questions people ask about 20 yard dumpsters
How much does an empty 20 yard container weigh? Around 4,000 pounds depending on steel gauge and manufacturer. That tare weight comes off at the scale, so you only pay for debris.
Can I fill it above the rails? No. The load has to sit level with the top rail so the tarp closes. An overfilled container is a load the driver legally can't move, and that's a wasted trip charge.
Can it go on my street in Manhattan? Only with a DOT permit, and only where the sidewalk and traffic lane can spare the room. Plenty of Manhattan blocks can't take a 22 foot container at all, which is when the 10 yard becomes the plan.
How long do I get it for? Standard is 7 to 14 days. On a permitted street placement the permit end date is the real deadline. Roll-off dumpster rental covers swap schedules for longer jobs, and construction dumpster rental covers multi-container sites.
Do you deliver outside the boroughs? Yes, including Newark, Hempstead and Union City. The service areas page lists everywhere.
What if I need it tomorrow? Private property placements usually go next business day. Same-day is a phone call, and emergency rental explains how the short-notice queue works.
What are the 20 yard dumpster measurements?
About 22 feet long, 8 wide, 4.5 tall. Confirm the dumpster dimensions 20 yard boxes carry at the yard serving you.
