How big is a 40 yard dumpster?
A 40 yard roll-off dumpster is an open-top steel container of about 40 cubic yards, delivered and collected on a hooklift truck. The footprint is identical to the 20 and 30 yard containers at 22 by 8 feet. The walls are what change, standing about 8 feet tall.
Eight feet of steel wall changes the job in two ways. You can't throw anything over the side, so a rear swing door and a ramp stop being optional. And the loaded height sits close to the truck's hoist envelope, which needs roughly 22 feet of vertical clearance to work. What is a 40 yard dumpster used for?
Bulky, light, high-volume debris. That's the whole brief. Typical New York work:

Weight allowance, and why the 40 is a volume container
Allowance is typically 4 to 6 tons. Federal rules cap a loaded truck at 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight under 23 CFR 658, and once you subtract the tractor and an empty container running roughly 7,000 to 8,000 pounds, the payload ceiling is what it is. That's not a policy anyone invented. It's the axle limit on the vehicle sent to collect it.
So the honest way to use a 40 yard container is to fill it with cubic yards, not pounds. If your debris is dense, book smaller and swap more often. One New York specific: your hauler needs a license from the NYC Business Integrity Commission, which regulates private trade waste under Title 16-A of the Administrative Code. On large commercial jobs the general contractor usually wants that license number on file before a container hits the site.
Can a 40 yard dumpster go on a New York City street?
Rarely, and only with a permit from the Department of Transportation, filed through the Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street. In practice, a 22 foot container with 8 foot walls on a public street is a hard sell in most of New York City. Pedestrian clearance decides it first: the 2010 ADA Standards require a minimum 36 inch clear width on a pedestrian access route in section 403.5.1, and a curb ramp, building entrance or emergency path can never be blocked. Add protected bike lanes, bus lanes and alternate side parking and the curb space usually isn't available. Routing is the other constraint, since commercial vehicles are banned from the parkway network, so the FDR Drive, the Belt Parkway and the Henry Hudson Parkway are all closed to the truck. Size doesn't change the restrictions. Asbestos goes to a licensed abatement contractor, and the NYC DEP Asbestos Control Program requires an ACP-5 filing before many Department of Buildings sign offs.
