How big is a 10 yard dumpster, and where does it fit?
A 10 yard roll off dumpster is a steel open-top container holding about 10 cubic yards of debris, delivered and collected on a hooklift truck. At 12 to 14 feet of length it takes up roughly one and a half parking spaces, which is why it's the only size that works on a lot of Brooklyn and Queens residential streets.
Low walls are the other reason people pick it. At 3.5 to 4 feet, you can throw material in over the side instead of walking it up a ramp, and the loaded height stays well clear of a fire escape or a low utility line. What fits in a 10 yard dumpster?
About 3 to 4 pickup truck loads. In practice that covers:
- A single bathroom gut, tile and tub and vanity included
- A small kitchen tear-out in a one-bedroom apartment
- 250 to 350 square feet of roof tear-off
- A brownstone basement or garage cleanout
- Deck boards from a modest back yard in Bay Ridge or Astoria
- Concrete, brick or soil as a dedicated clean load, priced the way construction debris is
That last one is the important one. Heavy material goes in a 10 yard container by design, not because it's cheap. A cubic yard of broken concrete weighs roughly 4,000 pounds, so two and a half yards of it already hits 5 tons. Nobody loads concrete into a bigger can because the truck can't legally lift it. Typical weekly market ranges run $425 to $650, with extra days around $50 to $115. Those figures were reviewed July 2026 and they're market ranges, not a quote. What moves the number in New York City is the curb, not the container. Manhattan placements and anything requiring a permitted parking lane sit at the top of the band. Outer-borough driveway jobs sit at the bottom.
The tonnage allowance is usually 1 to 2 tons, and everything above it bills by the ton at the transfer station rate. Ask for that per-ton number before you book. Do you need a permit for a 10 yard dumpster in NYC?
If it goes on a New York City street or sidewalk, yes. A permit from the Department of Transportation is required, handled through the Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street with borough offices doing approvals, and turnaround runs from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the work. On private property, no permit and often next-day delivery. Placement still has to clear the pedestrian route: the 2010 ADA Standards require a minimum 36 inch clear width in section 403.5.1, so a container that pushes foot traffic off a narrow sidewalk isn't legal even with paperwork. Asbestos goes to an abatement contractor, and the NYC DEP Asbestos Control Program requires an ACP-5 filing before many Department of Buildings sign offs. Televisions, monitors and computers have been banned from landfill disposal since January 2015 under New York State's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. Is a 10 yard big enough for a full apartment gut? Usually not. A one-bedroom cosmetic renovation fits. A full gut with plaster and lath wants a 20 yard container, and plaster is heavier than drywall, so watch the tonnage.
How much does an empty 10 yard container weigh? Roughly 2,000 to 3,000 pounds depending on the manufacturer and the gauge of the steel. That's the tare weight, and it's subtracted at the scale.
Can it sit on my driveway? Yes, on plywood under the rails to protect the surface. That's a five minute conversation at booking and it saves a repaving argument later. If the site also needs a lockable box for tools, a storage container drops the same way.
