What is an 8 stall restroom trailer?
An 8 stall restroom trailer is the largest towable restroom unit in normal rental circulation: eight private rooms with flushing toilets, running water, mirrors, lighting and climate control, split between a men's suite and a women's suite with separate entrances at either end. Most builds put urinals on the men's side, so the effective fixture count is higher than eight.
This is the size that replaces a bank of twenty portable toilets at a large event. It is also the size that gets turned away most often in New York, because 34 feet of trailer plus a tow vehicle is a 55 to 60 foot combination that has to be reversed into place. Do the weight arithmetic before you plan the tow. Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a 1,250 gallon waste tank at capacity is carrying over 10,400 pounds, and that sits on top of a dry weight that already reaches 14,000. Federal rules in 49 CFR 383 set the commercial driver's licence threshold at 26,001 pounds gross combination weight rating, which an eight-station unit and its truck reach without much effort. Nobody moves one of these with a half-ton pickup.
Power is the other hard limit. A 120 volt, 20 amp branch circuit delivers about 2,400 watts under NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, and an eight-station trailer running two air conditioners and two water heaters will draw many times that. Where can an 8 stall trailer go in New York City?
Realistically: stadium and arena lots, park service roads, large construction sites, private plazas and wide outer-borough streets. Not a Lower Manhattan crosstown block, not a brownstone garden, and not under a sidewalk shed.
The constraints that decide it:
- Turning and reversing room. A 55 to 60 foot combination needs a straight approach and somewhere to swing. If the truck cannot get out again, the placement fails whatever the permit says.
- Parkway ban. Commercial vehicles are banned from the parkway network, so the Belt Parkway, the FDR and the Henry Hudson are off the route sheet. Delivery runs on the NYC DOT truck route network, which adds real time to a Rockaway or Staten Island drop.
- Sidewalk sheds. The Department of Buildings Facade Inspection Safety Program keeps thousands of sheds up across Manhattan and the Bronx. A shed rules out the frontage entirely.
- Hydrants and standpipes. City traffic rules prohibit parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and a 34 foot trailer will find one on most blocks.

How many guests does an 8 stall trailer serve?
Portable Sanitation Association International event guidance puts one restroom per 50 to 100 guests across a four-hour event, plus 15 to 20 percent when alcohol is served. Eight stalls therefore covers 500 to 800 guests, and the urinals on the men's side push the practical number higher.

Servicing a tank this size mid-event
An eight-station trailer at a busy event will fill faster than the schedule assumes, and the fix is a pump truck on standby rather than a bigger tank. ANSI/PSAI Z4.3, the American National Standard for nonsewered waste-disposal systems, sets weekly service as the baseline for a standing unit, but a festival day is a different job: expect one or two mid-event pumps and a fresh-water top-up.
Waste goes to a Department of Environmental Protection wastewater resource recovery facility, and the city runs 14 of them handling about 1.3 billion gallons a day.
