Two different things get called a camping porta potty
The first is a portable camping toilet: a sealed cassette unit holding roughly 5 gallons, carried in a car boot, emptied by the owner at a dump station. It costs about the price of a weekend rental and retailers sell it. If you are two people going to a state park for three nights, that is your answer and we are not it.
The second is a serviced portable toilet: a full-size unit delivered by truck, with a 60 to 70 gallon holding tank per manufacturer spec, pumped out on a schedule by a licensed hauler. That is what a scout camporee, a group campsite, a race staging area or an event campground needs, and it is what we do. The mechanics of both are covered on how do porta potties work.
Where you can actually camp in and around New York City
The city has less camping than the searches suggest, and what exists is worth knowing before you plan anything.
- Inside the city. The National Park Service runs a campground at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, within Gateway National Recreation Area. NYC Parks also runs organised family camping programmes in parks across the boroughs.
- Group and scout sites. Staten Island and the outer edges of Queens and the Bronx hold most of the group camping ground inside the city line.
- Upstate and out of state. Most people searching from here are heading to Harriman, the Catskills or the Adirondacks. New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation requires primitive campsites to be at least 150 feet from roads, trails and water, and Leave No Trace guidance is a cathole 6 to 8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from water. Neither of those is a rental problem. It is a pack-it-out problem.

How many units does a group campsite need?
Camping is a residential use, so it needs more units per head than a four hour event does. Plan one unit per 20 to 25 people for a weekend, and add handwashing at every unit cluster rather than one station for the whole site.

Where units are clustered at one location, the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 exception 4 puts the accessible share at 5 percent with a minimum of one, so any organised camp open to the public needs at least one ADA accessible unit on level ground. - A portable sink at the cook tent, since food service needs its own
- Shower trailer rental for anything over about three nights, which needs power and a water supply
- A roll-off dumpster for a large site, or a 10 yard container for a smaller one

Placement on ground with no hardstand
A standard unit is roughly 44 inches wide by 48 inches deep and 90 inches tall per manufacturer spec, 150 to 200 pounds empty and near 700 pounds full. On a campsite that full weight is the number that matters, because soft ground under a loaded unit is how units end up leaning.
- Set units on plywood or matting on grass, sand or soft dirt
- Keep them 150 feet or more from any water source, and downhill of the cook and sleeping areas
- Leave the service truck a route in and a stop within roughly 30 feet of the units
- Split clusters across a large site rather than putting them all at the gate
- Light the walk, because a campsite restroom is used mostly at night. A light tower is overkill for 25 people and correct for 250

Do you need a permit for a camping porta potty?
Not on private campground ground, and not inside a state or federal campground where the operator has already arranged sanitation. A unit standing on a New York City street or sidewalk needs a permit from the Department of Transportation, filed through borough offices, with turnaround running from about a day to several weeks depending on the borough and the type of work. The NYC DOT Bureau of Permit Management and Construction Control at 55 Water Street handles it, and 311 will confirm what applies.

Servicing a campsite
ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 sets weekly servicing as the floor for a unit in normal use, and camping is heavier than normal use because the same people use the same unit for every purpose over several days. A weekend camp usually arrives serviced and goes back after. Anything longer wants a mid-stay visit, scheduled when the group is out rather than at breakfast.
